Spring into Action: Tips to Take Control of a Redesign
I don’t get bored easily, but I get bored. Perhaps, that’s why I like living in an area that experiences all four seasons. I enjoy fall and winter the most because I’m a huge football fan. I love spring; its sense of rebirth that floats in the air. I take the spring freshness seriously, changing everything from clothes to home accessories and rearranging furniture.
Spring updates aren’t just for clothes and the home. It’s a great way to keep your business fresh. About a month ago, I began to pull together a spring update for Custom Alley Slipcovers website. We relaunched it in September with a design different from the original website. Still, spring is the ideal time to highlight different projects, especially photos.

As you can imagine, a home design business is brimming with photos. That’s what prompted the discussion; how to update photos without making it difficult for visitors to find their favorites. There’s nothing worse than finding something you love and then trying to find the photo again to show a friend. I hate to be frustrated. Keep that in mind; you’ll see why below. Patience.
Remember this isn’t a complete overhaul, just a spring update focused on the home and services pages. Choosing just two pages kept this update manageable and didn’t change the look and feel so drastically that returning visitors wouldn’t know where to find things. That’s important.

Here’s what you’ll need
Patience, time, another set of eyes, and a plan. I’m lucky Allison, owner and friend, likes to be involved so I have a built-in separate set of eyes. I am a huge fan of team work and pulling ideas together. When everyone walks away from the table feeling like they lost a little that’s when you know you’ve got it right.
Patience – You may not get it right the first time and that’s Ok. I played with a variety of looks for the home page before finding the right one. When you’re dealing with photos, sometimes you have to let them dictate the design. Sometimes… I don’t live being married to any one idea because it backs us into a corner and time is wasted trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. That being said, I had a general idea of what I thought would work. Then, I had to go about getting it done.
Time – Whether you’re updating photo pages or written content, give yourself plenty of time to sit with it. Build it or write it and then walk away from it for at least 24-hours. When you go back to it, you’ll tweak things, here and there. Repeat the walk away process. HINT: Don’t get so stuck here so you never moved forward
Second set of eyes – No man, or woman, is an island. You can’t do it ALL on your own; no matter how good you are. Ask friends, family and colleagues to take a look – listen to their suggestions; even if you decide to keep things the way they are.
A plan – You don’t have to make your updates ALL at once. It’s a great idea to spread them out over time. At some point in the not so distant future, we’re going to tackle the Look Book or photo pages. Our plan includes putting all the photos into one place and labeling it so visitors can find them easily. Your welcome! Seriously, it’s the small things that often have the greatest impact.
One more thing…don’t discount your experience as a consumer. Before you set out to make changes, big or small, do your research. Check out those websites or social media profiles that appeal to you the most. Ask yourself why. And remember, you opened your business for a reason (hopefully because it makes you happy) so clients and prospects are a version of yourself.
Whether you get bored easily, change is good. If you’re one of those people that saves links or snapshots for one day let that one day be now. Life is too short and let’s face it, change is going to happen anyway. Why not roll with it?
