3 Ways to Breathe New Life into Old Content
We’ve all ordered something online that didn’t fit our expectations or perhaps, size, when it arrived. Most people return the items without giving a second thought to how it can be transformed into exactly what they need or want with a little creative thinking. After an experience, I had last week, I wonder is it because people are so busy it doesn’t occur to them or are they afraid to step on a ledge and think…dare I say it…outside the box.
Whether it’s clothes or home décor, re-purposing items into something completely different than its original use is a thriving business but most people don’t apply the same idea to their professional lives. Fact: for most people a new project means re-inventing the wheel. Truth: It’s acceptable, and sometimes, even preferable, to use content and messages you’ve already developed.
Making old content fresh again isn’t just about recirculating it. So before you re-tweet or share a memory on Facebook, make sure it’s still relevant and up-to-date unless you’re using it as “look how far we’ve come.”

Answer me this: Whether you’re responding to a discussion forum on LinkedIn, or some industry-specific networking site, use the opportunity to point back to a more detailed blog on your site. Sharing your knowledge establishes you as an expert and introduces you to a new audience. People who want a more detailed explanation will visit your blog. Make sure it’s up-to-date.
Paint me a picture: Some people respond better to visual content. Turn a photo-heavy blog into a Pintrest board and a slideshow into an infographic. Sometimes, less is more. They say a picture is worth a thousand words so let the picture do the talking.
Tell me a story…a complete one: If you’ve written extensively about any topic, consider turning them into a comprehensive guide post. Include just enough information in your guide post and link to your more detailed “older” blog. Dust it off before the guests come, though, you wouldn’t want them to visit when the house is a mess.
