Of all the myths about blogging, and there are plenty of them, the one that sets my hair on fire is this one: it’s all about the numbers. If your blog doesn’t look like the Garden State Parkway on a Saturday in July or August than whatever you’re doing isn’t working. WRONG!
You can be a remarkable writer, create great content and still not get noticed – at first. Does great content get noticed? Sure, but it might take weeks, months or longer. Seriously, think about the searches you do, either as a professional or personally, and think about the times you’ve searched and found nothing. And then searched and BAM there it is! The truth is you, like everything in life, you get out of blogging what you’re willing to put into it.
Yes, your blog needs readers so traffic is important but it shouldn’t be your only matrix of success. If that’s why you’re blogging and how you’re blogging…congratulations, you’ve successfully alienated half of your potential readership and future customers. Disagree? Think about how you react to clicking on a headline only to realize how misleading it is? Do you linger on that site? No. Why? Because you feel manipulated. And if you’re like me you swear off that page for good.
So, why invest your time and resources into regularly writing a blog? Simply, you are building a valuable relationship with your readers and prospective customers. If people don’t trust you they aren’t going to do business with you. It’s that simple. You may never convert some of your readers into clients and that’s Ok. They may transform themselves into your brand ambassador, sharing your content with family, friends, co-workers etc. Honestly, that’s what you want. That’s how you improve traffic and grow your business.
More Common Myths:
Myth 1: Pin your blog posts on a Pinterest board: This one isn’t so cut and dry. There’s a school of thought that says – no; this is about as lame, lazy and unimaginative as it gets. And we understand that point of view. But there’s another school of thought that says: why bury your blogs on a board about some vague topic? Yes, Pinterest is about reconnecting with things you love and in a perfect world we’d all have hours of free time to spend searching every board for what we love. I say decide this on your own. You know your clients better than anyone else. And let’s face it, anyone visiting your Pinterest boards for the first time will click on a My Blog board if they’re really interested in what you have to say.
Myth 2: Blogs should be short and sweet: If we can be so blunt…bull! Stop agonizing about your word count and concentrate on bringing value to your readers, regardless of how many words it takes. Don’t sacrifice great content for word length.
Myth 3: You need to blog everyday: Don’t post blogs just because that’s what everyone else seems to be doing. I like a weekly blog. I think it shows your readers their important to you and you’re committed to providing valuable information without inundating them with too much information.
Slow and steady wins the race. Remember, page clicks are just that - clicks. You want your readers to linger; to look to you as a subject matter expert or someone who makes them laugh (depending on the purpose of your blog) or maybe both. Looking for a quick fix? It’s out there but ask yourself are you looking for one-time customers or returning clients? There is a difference. You get to decide – all of it. Good luck!
