4 Steps to Get You Back to The Basics

January 18, 2017

Having a difficult time getting back to the basics after the holidays? After extending my stay with family through the New Year and then some, so am I.

My intention was to hit the ground running last week but you know how it is the first week after vacation – just sorting through emails and returning calls…well…before you know it the week’s behind you and you’re into the middle of your second week back.

That’s where I find myself today. Getting back to a normal routine has been a fight so far but I’ve learned a few things along the way that I thought I’d share:

  1. Embrace the change – Whether your break was a vacation; illness or something else, remember getting back into the swing of things doesn’t happen overnight and that’s OK. Sometimes, our routines need to be shaken up and we need to get use to our new “norm.” Be deliberate and your perseverance will pay off.

  2. Organize, organize, organize – Don’t skip this step just because you feel like you’re behind the eight ball. Taking the time up front to organize yourself will set you up for success down the line and set the tone for work all year.

  3. Start small - If it’s the gym you’re struggling to get back to, forgive yourself and go for a walk in your neighborhood instead. It might help you organize yourself and your goals. When you feel like your new “norm” is doable then hit the gym. Solid advice I got from a friend a long time ago: if you haven’t been to the gym in a while don’t make a Monday your first day back. Get there on the weekend or another day during the week. Work yourself up to Mondays. Instant success.

  4. Listen…to music that encourages you. It will put you in the right mindset and make reaching your goals more accessible. Think about it: you listen to Christmas music to put you in the mood. Why not listen to music that motivates you?

Final Thought:

Shaking up your routine is a great way to reinvigorate you – don’t fight it. Welcome it!  Remember, you’re going to have days of great accomplishment followed by days when you feel like you’re faking it. Don’t give up and don’t beat yourself up. You’re human. If there’s one goal you don’t want to abandon this year, it’s the one where you’re kinder to yourself.
